What is AVID?

Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is an academic elective course that prepares students for college readiness and success.  It is scheduled during the regular school day as a year-long course.  Each week, students receive instruction utilizing a rigorous college preparatory curriculum provided by AVID Center, tutor-facilitated study groups, motivational activities and academic survival skills.  The course emphasis rhetorical reading, analytical writing, collaborative discussion strategies, tutorial inquiry study groups, preparation for college entrance and placement exams, college study skills and test-taking strategies, note-taking and research.  AVID students also benefit from college field trips as well as guest speakers.

Students who are accepted into the AVID elective class have undergone a nomination and interview process.  We have high expectations of our AVID students both academically and behaviorally.  Students must enroll in higher level PAP or AP classes in order to prepare for college.
